Floating Loft Floor with Air Gap

When flooring a loft, it is important that the floor is installed correctly and that the existing insulation and services are not compromised. There are a number of flooring systems available on the market, but at Loft Ladders Scotland, our preferred method is a floating floor system with a 50mm air gap.

Before any flooring is installed, we carefully peel back the existing loft insulation to survey the area beneath. This allows us to identify and work around any potential obstructions or services, including water pipes, electrical boxes, junction boxes, stop cocks and recessed downlights.

Once we have a clear understanding of what is beneath the insulation, we install spinal beams perpendicular to the existing joists. These are set to the appropriate height, bringing the new floor structure above the existing insulation rather than compressing it.

We then install the additional timbers perpendicular to the spinal beams, creating a 50mm air gap between the top of the existing insulation and the underside of the new loft flooring. The loft flooring is then installed over this floating timber framework.

This method provides a solid, practical loft floor while allowing the insulation to remain at its required depth and helping to avoid unnecessary compression of the existing insulation.
